Abstract

1,248,953. Silyl chromatic catalyst in fluidized bed polymerization. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 21 Aug., 1968 [21 Aug., 1967 (2)], No. 11181/71. Divided out of 1,248,951. Addition to 1,248,951. Heading C3P. A continuous process for the production of solid particulate polymers of olefinically unsaturated compounds comprises simultaneously (a) contacting a gaseous stream containing said compound with a powdery silyl chromate catalyst in a polymerization zone comprising a fluidized bed, (b) withdrawing a portion of the particles, (c) withdrawing the unreacted portion of the gaseous stream, (d) cooling said unreacted gases to remove the heat of reaction, and (e) recycling the cooled gaseous stream. In examples, ethylene or an ethylene-propylene mixture are polymerized using a bis-(triphenyl silyl) chromate-ethoxydiethylaluminium catalyst on a silica support.
