Abstract
1,248,778. Paper laminates. BUDD CO. 8 Oct., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 47686/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions D2, F2 and H1] A method of making a laminar structure of interfelted paper comprises superimposing in laminar relationship a plurality of plies of paper consisting essentially of aromatic polyamide fibres and fibrids, said plies being impregnated with at least one solvating agent for said fibres and fibrids, evaporating the solvating agent from said plies whilst in superposed laminar relation and subjecting said plies to compression normal to their plane. A solvating agent is defined as being an agent which forms a complex between one or molecules of the agent and aromatic polyamide molecules resulting in swelling of the fibres or fibrids without destroying them. Exemplified solvating agents are dimethyl sulphoxide, N,N,-dimethyl formamide, N,N- dimethyl acetamide and N - methyl - 2 - pyrrolidone. The solvating agent may be diluted with an inert liquid diluent, e.g. toluene, acetone or methyl ethyl ketone and may be applied to the paper by immersion, spraying, brushing or rolling. Evaporation may be effected by the application of heat. Compression is preferably effected between platens; alternatively the compression may be effected by the shrinkage resulting from heating a plurality of sheets wrapped around a mandrel.
