Mechanical telegraphs.-In a ship telegraph or like signalling-device in which an audible warning is given when the pointer of the indicator is moved from one indication to another, a bell is struck by two or more hammers operated successively to ensure non-failure of the audible signal. The apparatus described is of the type having signal and reply pointers 8, 10 moving over a dial, the transmission being by chains 14, 19 passing over pulleys 13, 16 moving with the pointers. The bell 26 has two hammers 21, 22 pivoted at 23, the short arms being attached to springs 24, 25. The hammers are operated by corresponding threearmed members mounted on a common pivot 27. Two arms of each member co-operate with the short arm of the hammer. The third arm 28 is in the path of teeth 33 on a disk 31 moving with the pointer. Two sets of teeth are provided, the teeth of one set alternating with those of the other set, so that the hammers are operated alternately. A modification is described in which the hammers are mounted at opposite sides of the bell and are operated by a single set of teeth engaging pawls pivoted on the hammer. In this form, the signalling pointers and mechanism may be duplicated to give two independent sets of signals on one dial, two corresponding toothed bell-operating disks being used. The pawls carried by the hammers are wide enough to engage both disks.
