Abstract
1,248,398. Titanium dioxide; titanium tetra- Chloride. LAPORTE TITANIUM Ltd. 23 Dec., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 59203/67. Headings C1A and CIN. A process for making titanium dioxide comprises chlorinating titanium-bearing material to produce titanium tetrachloride, which is then oxidized to produce titanium dioxide suspended in a chlorine-containing gas stream, separating from the gas stream titanium dioxide and any other suspended solids, passing the separated gas, at a temperature not more than 50‹ C., through a scrubber containing concentrated sulphuric acid, compressing the scrubbed gas using a liquid piston compressor in which the liquid is concentrated sulphuric acid, passing the compressed gas through a mist filter, and using the filtered gas to chlorinate further titanium-bearing material. A fluidized bed may be used in the chlorination, the filtered gas entering the reactor through apertures in its base. Before entering the scrubber, the separated gas stream may be cooled to a temperature of - 15‹ C. to the melting point of titanium tetrachloride. The sulphuric acid in the scrubber is desirably replaced, periodically or continuously with acid of nil or low titanium content so that the concentration of titanium (expressed as tetrachloride) in the acid in the scrubber is maintained below 10% by weight. The " low-titanium " acid may be recycled from the compressor, which is then replenished with sulphuric acid containing substantially no titanium. The oxidation may be carried out in a fluidized bed as described in Specification 815,891, or by a method involving separately preheating the reactants, as described in Specifications 1,049,282 and 1,173,592. The separation of the chlorine-containing gas stream may be effected by depositing a bed of solids from a low-velocity gas-stream and passing inert gas therethrough, as described in Specification 1,098,881.
