Abstract

1,248,141. Staking electrical terminals; shearing. AMP Inc. 19 May, 1970 [17 June, 1969], No. 30724/69. Headings B3A and B3W. Apparatus for staking terminals from a strip 111a, 111b of such terminals to a board, comprises a staker 97 movable towards and away from an anvil 45 having a holder for a leading terminal, feed means for feeding the strip past a shear block 33 to the terminal holder, the anvil 45 being adjacent the shear block 33 and movable to move the holder laterally of the shear block between a first position in alignment with the strip feed path and a second position in alignment with the staker 97, movement of the holder in one direction between the positions shearing a leading terminal from a strip and in the other direction advancing the staker towards the anvil. A support board (210), Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), is placed on a plate 70 and the required staking holes (212) are aligned with the staker by engaging a finger 74 in a corresponding groove 75 of a comb 76 by sliding and pivoting the plate about a shaft 73. This pivotal movement also engages arms 88, 89 of microswitches 86, 87 and locates arms (113), (114), of a terminal pin (110) in the holes of the support board (210), Figs. 1, 4 (not shown). The switch 86 controls the supply of air to a unit 91, which actuates the staker and the switch 87 controls a solenoid-operated change-over valve supplying air to a unit 56 via a switch 69. The unit 91 is actuated to drive the staker 97 downwardly along with a tubular member 103 fitted with a rubber pad 106. The pad engages the surface of the support board, whereupon downward movement of the member 103 ceases, and the staker movement continues until the terminal pin is staked to the board, the pin being held in a channel 50 in the anvil 45. Terminal feed.-A channel 51 is aligned with the channel 25 which contains the strip 111a and a pin 57 engages a microswitch 63 controlling air flow to a unit 17 as the unit 56 is advanced, thereby engaging the leading pin of the strip 111a with a feed finger 22 and advancing it into the channel 51 and retracting a unit 16. As the unit 91 retracts, a striker plate 68 actuates the switch 69 and pivoting of the support plate. 70, as the support board is removed, disengages the plate from the arms 88, 89, thereby activating the switch 69 to retract the unit 56. The unit 56 moves a lever 55 to the right pivoting: the anvil 49 anti-clockwise about a pin 43 to shear the leading terminal in co-operation with the shear block 33 from the strip and align it with the staker. At the same time the channel 50 is aligned with the channel 25 containing the strip 111b in readiness for the next operating cycle.
