Abstract
1,248,005. Olefinic terpolymers. SNAM PROGETTI SpA. 10 Dec., 1969 [18 Dec., 1968], No. 60399/69. Heading C3P. Curable, amorphous olefinic terpolymers of two different alpha-olefins having up to 10 carbon atoms, and an alkenyl-substituted polycyclic polyene hydrocarbon containing at least two rings, at least one of the rings having an endomethylene group, at least one other ring being cycloolefinic and the cycloolefinic ring being substituted by at least one alkenyl radical, claimed per se, can be prepared by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst - comprising a compound of a Group IV to Group VIII transition metal and an aluminium compound of the formula AlRX 1 X 2 .mZ, wherein R is hydrogen or C 1-10 alkyl, each of X 1 and X 2 is hydrogen, C 1-10 alkyl, halogen or secondary amine, Z is a Lewis base and m is 0 or an integer, or a polyiminoalane. In the examples: (1) ethylene, propylene and a compound of the formula are polymerized in n-hexane using (C 2 H 5 ) 2 ClAl and vanadium triacetylacetonate; (2) ethylene, propylene and wherein R is hydrogen, or wherein R is hydrogen and n is one, or wherein R is hydrogen and n is one, are polymerized in n-heptane using (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl and vanadium in acetylacetonate; (3) ethylene, propylene and wherein R is hydrogen are polymerized in toluene utilizing VCl 4 and (C 2 H 5 ) 2 ClAl; (4) ethylene, propylene and wherein R is hydrogen and n is one, are polymerized in toluene using (C 2 H 5 )AlCl and vanadium triacetyl acetonate in the presence of anisole.
