Abstract
1,247,169. Drive for toy vehicle. E. A. BETTAG [trading as BIG SPIELWARENFABRIK DIPL-ING ERNST. A. BETTAG and H. BROSS], 22 Nov., 1968 [22 Nov., 1967], No. 55498/68. Heading A6S. A toy, see for Example Fig. 4, vehicle comprises a drive shaft, 3, and a one way clutch, 2, acting, in one rotational direction only, to connect the drive shaft with the rotary member, 21, which is rotatably mounted on the drive shaft and to which is fixed a resiliently extensible cord 7, the other end. of the cord being fixed to the housing by the anchor, 9; such that during the winding on of the cord and during the drive phase this connection is made but that when the cord has been unwound from the drive shaft 3, at the end of the drive phase, the clutch disengages and the drive shaft is then able to continue to rotate. The member 21, is resiliently urged into the interengaging position with the coupling member 20, of the drive shaft by the oblique mounting of the cord 7. Indentations may be formed in the oppositely facing radial end faces of the coupling member and the rotary member to accommodate a helical spring surrounding the drive shaft (Fig. 6 not shown), a stop on the drive shaft preventing excess axial displacement of the rotary member. In order to prevent the elongation, beyond the proportionality limit, of the resilient cord, the abutment, 8, engages with the housing mounted stop, 24, when tension in the cord reaches a given value. Alternatively (Figs. 2, 5 not shown) a disengaging means may operate when this tension is reached. The rotary member may be mounted in bearings on the housing or alternatively the drive shaft may be thus mounted. The one way cltuch may comprise a spirally arcuate spring (15), included in the rotary member and a radial projection engageable with one end of the spring during rotation of the drive shaft, the spring flexing axially when relative movement occurs in the opposite direction to permit freewheeling. The rotary member 21, is mounted centrally of the drive shaft, which bends when the drive cord reaches the given tension. Alternatively the rotary member moves as a whole, transversely of its length, when the tension reaches the given value, resilient split bearings being provided. Figures 7 and 8 (not shown) show means whereby the drive wheels are engagable with the rotary member via a bevel wheel and gear wheels coaxial with the drive shaft and rotary member or via a retractable surface wheel and gear wheels thereon and on the rotary member; this means coming into operation when the vehicle housing is pressed down, the gearing being such that winding of the drive cord may be achieved by pushing the car in a forward direction. The gear wheels and retractable surface wheel are of such a size as to require less movement of the vehicle during the winding on stage than that produced during the drive phase. Flanges 13, guides 25, or stops 26, are provided to limit the surface over which the cord is wound on.
