Abstract
1,246,304. Heat-insulating composition. W. FUCHS. 11 Nov., 1968 [22 Nov., 1967], No. 53274/68. Heading C3N. A heat-insulating composition for lining chill moulds in the region of the ingot mould or for forming mould hoods, risers or other components of a mould comprises a refractory granular material, an organic fibrous material and a bonding agent, the said organic fibrous material being at least substantially carbonized. The carbonized fibrous material may be derived from comminuted wood or peat, e.g. charcoal. The binders specified are starch, spent sulphite wash, synthetic resins, bentonite or clay. The particulate refractory specified is perlite. Optional ingredients specified are vermiculite and asbestos. The carbonized fibrous material may be treated with a heat-resistant substance such as a silicone. A specific example specifies a composition comprising 62% by volume charcoal, 15% by volume perlite, 10% by volume starch and 13% by volume water, which mixture after pressing and drying comprises 75% by weight charcoal, 6% by weight perlite and 19% by weight bonding agent.'
