Abstract

1,246,287. Ball-joints. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. 21 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 8786/68. Heading E2F. In a ball-joint comprising a housing 12 containing two seat members 16 and 18 which surround the ball 28, and a retainer 22 located between the seat member 18 and an abutment 24 at the opposite end of the housing, the seat member 18 has a peripheral rebate 20 which receives the retainer 22. The rebate is wedgeshaped in cross-section, tapering in a direction 'away from the abutment 24. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the spring 26 holding the seat member 16 against the ball is replaced by a rubber ring (40). Channels 17, (19, Fig. 4) and 32, and grease nipple 34 facilitate lubrication of the joint. The retainer is basically cylindrical but may have axially directed hollow ribs (36, Fig. 2 not shown) in the wall, for lubrication and strengthening purposes, and an annular rib (38, Fig. 3 not shown) in the end face. There may be a wavy or castellated washer between .the seat members 16 and 18.
