Abstract

1,246,134. Applying an antistatic treating composition to artificial filaments. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 24 March, 1969 [22 April, 1968], No. 18929/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Synthetic and cellulose derivative filaments are rendered more processable by applying to them an antistatic textile treating composition comprising a polysiloxane/polyoxyalkylene copolymer and a partial phosphate ester. The copolymer may consist of one or more siloxy groups and one or more oxyalkylene groups wherein n and m are at least 3, R and R<SP>1</SP> are the same or different hydrocarbon groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and X is an integer of 2 to 4. Especially preferred copolymers contain no Si-O-C bonds. The copolymer may have the formula wherein m is 3 to 100 and R is hydrogen or an alkyl, aryl or acyl group. When R is hydrogen, m may be less than 60. The partial phosphate esters may have the formula wherein Y is 1 or 2, M is a monovalent cation and R is an organic radical optionally containing oxyalkylene groups. The textile treating composition may also contain a lubricant and/or a surface-active agent. In the example, the composition consists of a mixture of 68À5 parts (by weight) of isocetyl stearate, 12À5 parts of the partial glyceryl ester of oleic acid, 15 parts of the potassium salt of a partial phosphate (prepared from a mixture of fatty alcohols consisting chiefly of lauryl alcohol) and 4 parts of a polysiloxane/polyoxyethylene copolymer containing 88% of an ethylene oxide block and 12% of a dimethyl siloxane block having a trimethyl siloxy end cap. The mixture is emulsified with water to provide an aqueous emulsion containing 20% by weight of solids and is applied to freshly spun polyethylene À terephthalate filaments to provide them with a coating of about 0À8% of the residual composition and the filaments are drawn at a draw ratio of 2À8 at a speed of about 2500 metres per minute. The filaments to which the composition is applied may consist of elastomers (e.g. segmented polyurethanes), acrylic polymers, polyamides, polyesters, polyolefins, copolymers of these polymers, or cellulose esters.
