Abstract

1,245,081. Applying and removing stoppers. W. MEADOWCROFT & SON Ltd. 18 Oct., 1968 [18 July, 1967], No. 32963/67. Heading B8T. Apparatus for fitting stoppers to and removing stoppers from bottles includes a head 78 having at least two gripping jaws 90 which are slidable in inwardly tapered surfaces of head members 88, 100, so that downward movement of the jaws 90 causes them to grip radially a stopper 102, the head 78 being rotatable in order to screw-up or unscrew the stopper. As shown, the apparatus has two heads 78, each being provided on the end of a cylinder 64 slidable in a sleeve 52, which sleeves revolve about a fixed shaft 10 via members 42 and 44 and also about their own axes via gear-wheel 72 and meshing teeth 40 provided on the interior of a stationary cylindrical member 38. Bottles 16 are supplied to a rotating table 14 and are gripped by jaws 18, and a head 78 is lowered on to the stopper 102 via a cam follower 74, attached to cylinder 64, rolling on a fixed cam 32. The cylinder 64 is supplied with pneumatic fluid via passages 106, 118, tube 120, valve 124 and tube 128, a piston 82 in cylinder 64 then being depressed to lower jaws 90 to grip the stopper 102 via piston-rod 84 and collar 94. The stopper 102 is then unscrewed since the head 78 is continuously rotating. The head is lifted via follower 74 to remove the stopper, and the valve 124 cuts-off the pneumatic supply so that the jaws 90 release the stopper. The bottle is then discharged from the machine. The valve 124 is operated by a cam follower 132 rolling on a cam 34. The apparatus may be adjusted to compensate for use of the machine with different height bottles.
