Abstract
1,244,318. Winches. OTIS ELEVATOR CO. 22 April, 1969 [14 June, 1968], No. 28533/68. Heading B8B. An elevator hoisting machine comprises a speed reducer interconnecting a motor 55, 56 or a hoisting rope sheave mounted on an axis 29, the reducer including a worm 17 on the motor shaft 18 and a worm-wheel 19 on the sheave shaft, an upper casing 23 in which the motor shaft 18 is journalled, and a lower casing 24 in which the sheave shaft is journalled, the two casings being adapted to be secured together in two positions 180 degrees apart about a vertical axis 31 passing through the worm and worm-wheel whereby a right or left hand machine may be formed. The worm or worm-wheel are completely enclosed by the abutting casings 23, 24 and the chamber formed thereby is used as an oil bath. The degree of vertical engagement between the worm and worm-wheel is adjustable by shims placed between the adjacent horizontal faces of the two casings 23, 24, and the horizontal alignment between the worm and worm-wheel is adjustable by further shims placed between a vertical skirt on the lower casing and one sidewall of the upper casing, both these pairs of adjacent faces being adjustably halted together. The end of the shaft 18 remote from the motor incorporates a brake drum 58 acted upon by spring biased shoes releasable by electromagnetic means.
