Abstract

1,244,168. Stabilizing polyolefins. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Sept., 1968 [14 Dec., 1967], No. 56883/67. Heading C3P. Polymers of branched and cycloalkyl substituted mono-α-olefins having at least 5 carbon atoms are stabilized by incorporating therein boric or pyroboric acid or an anhydride or ester thereof. The compositions may also contain phenolic antioxidants, sulphur compounds, phosphite esters, metal soaps and other conventional additives, many of which are listed. The polymers may be derived from 4-methylpentene-1, 3-methyl butene-1, 3-methylhexene-1, 4-methylhexene- 1, 5-methylhexene- 1, 5,5-dimethylhexene-1 1 and vinylcyclohexane, optionally with ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1 and decene-1. Examples described stabilizing poly 4-methylpentene- 1 with (1) boric acid or anhydride; (2) boric anhydride; (3) pentaerythritol ester of #(3,5-di-t.- butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid, dilauryl thiodipropionate and boric acid or anhydride; and (4) the above pentaerythrityl ester and tri-isobutyl, tri-n-butyl, tri-isoamyl or triphenyl borate or di-o-phenylene pyroborate.
