1,243,992. Printing inks containing ethylenic/acetylenic alcohol copolymers. TALLINSKY POLITEKHNICHESKY INSTITUT. 27 Oct., 1969 [26 July, 1968], No. 30386/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Printing inks suitable for application to polyolefins, glass, metal and regenerated cellulose comprise (a) a copolymer of an unsaturated carbinol containing at least one olefinic bond and at least one acetylenic bond, (b) a drying oil and/or a drying oil-modified alkyd resin, (c) a salt of a carboxylic acid containing at least 6 carbon atoms, (d) a pigment and (e) a solvent. Copolymer (a) may be, for example, a copolymer of dimethyl vinyl ethynyl carbinol of the formula: with one or more comonmers, e.g. methacrylate esters, styrene or acrylonitrile. Suitable as component (b) are polymerised linseed oil (linseed varnish), pentaerythritol-phthalic acid polyester modified with linseed oil (pentaphthalic varnish) and glycerine-phthalic acid polyester modified with linseed. oil (glyptal varnish). The salt (c) may be a resinate, linoleate or naphthenate of calcium, manganese, lead, cobalt or aluminium. Pigment (d) may be organic or inorganic, e.g. phthalocyanine blue or a red organic pigment. Solvents (e) specified are toluene, decalin, tetralin, nitroparaffin solvent, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and turpentine. The printing inks may optionally also include a filler, e.g. "printing white" which is a product obtained by the joint precipitation of aluminium hydroxide and barium sulphate. In Examples, ethyl alcohol and di-nbutyl phthalate are included as plasticisers. The inks are useful for silk screen stencil dyeing, as well as for off-set, intaglio and relief printing; spraying or brushing techniques may also be used. In Examples, the inks are applied to polyethylene film and polyethylene bottles.
