Abstract
1,243,821. Helicopter rotor bearings. MESSERSCHMITT-BOLKOW-BLOHM G.m.b.H. 4 Oct., 1968 [4 Oct., 1967], No. 47216/68. Heading B7W. [Also in Division F2] A helicopter rotor comprises a hub 1 connected to blade roots such as 8 by laminated elastomer/metal bearings so that the forces acting on each bearing are substantially normal to the laminations of that bearing. Blade root 8 is connected to the arms 6 of stirrup 5 by pin 7, and stirrup 5 is linked through a stirrup 4 and separated therefrom by laminated bearing 9. The arms of stirrup 4 are connected to mountings 2 on hub 1 by pins 3. Stirrup 5 has an extension 12 housed in laminated bearing 13, while stirrup 4 has an extension 10 housed in laminated bearing 11; a threaded part 14 of extension 10 has a nut 16 which, with laminated bearing 15, may be used to pull extension 10, and hence to stress bearing 9. In operation, flexible blades are used to provide flapping and blade lead-lag; bearings 11, 13 have laminations parallel to the blade axis and absorb the forces transverse to the blade, while bearing 9 has transverse laminations and absorbs radial forces. The bearings are easily deformable in shear to allow variations of blade angle. Pre-stressing bearing 9 with nut 16 prevents looseness in the bearing when the rotor is stationary. An embodiment using two conical bearings is described, Fig. 3 (not shown).
