Abstract
1,243,604. Polyurethane latex. JEFFERSON CHEMICAL CO. Inc. 13 Jan., 1970 [21 Jan., 1969], No. 1699/70. Heading C3R. A stable elastomeric polyurethane latex is prepared by (a) reacting a molar excess of an organic diisocyanate with a polymeric diol having a molecular weight of from 400 to 2000 such that the mole ratio of diisocyanate to diol is between 1À5:1 and 2À0:1; (b) emulsifying the resulting isocyanate-terminated prepolymer in an aqueous medium with agitation in the presence of an emulsifying agent which will give an oil-in-water emulsion; and (c) chain extending the emulsified prepolymer by adding 0.8 to 1.2 molar equivalents per molar equivalent of unreacted isocyanate groups of a polyoxypropylenediamine having a molecular weight of from 190 to 1000 and the general formula wherein n is from 2 to 16. Examples specify the use of toluene and hydrogenated 4,41-diphenylmethane diisocyanates and, as suitable diols, polypropylene glycols of M.W. 600, 800 and 1,200, polytetramethylene ether glycol of M.W. 1000 and polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene copolymer diol of M.W. 1000. Polyoxyethylene polyoxpropylene copolymer diol may also be used as an emulsifying agent in conjunction with a toluene/water dispersion medium. The latex may be aged after preparation and subsequently used to coat films.
