In the preparation of self-sustaining fodder wafers, a first portion of green crop which has been crushed is mixed with a second uncrushed portion of green crop, the first portion acting as a binding agent. Thus a homogeneous mass of the green crop may be partially crushed with mixing to provide the desired mix. A suitable apparatus comprises two gear wheels, with teeth of involute form, which are movable towards and away from each other, whereby, when green crop is passed there between, only a portion is crushed. Various forms of surface configurations of suitable crushing rollers are discussed.
