Abstract
1,243,663. Coating apparatus. KODAK Ltd. 28 Jan., 1969 [2 Feb., 1968], No. 5327/68. Heading D1L. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] An apparatus for coating a supporting layer consisting of at least two lengths joined end to end by a splicing layer comprises a coating station where the coating material may be caused to flow on to a moving supporting layer, means for moving the supporting layer longitudinaly past the coating station, splice sensing means to detect a splice layer in the supporting layer moving towards the coating station and means responsive to the splice sensing means for wetting the splice layer before it reaches the coating station. The splice wetting means may comprise a water supply conduit and a means for directing a jet of air over the mouth of the conduit to produce a spray of water droplets. The means to actuate the splice wetting means may comprise a valve controlling the flow of compressed air to form the jet of air directed over the mouth of the said conduit, the valve being actuated by energization of a solenoid. The solenoid may be energized by a sensing unit which includes an electrical circuit the capacitance of which is arranged to change when a metallized splicing tape approaches the sensing unit.
