In the production of liquid pig iron or steel by smelting reduction, wherein a bath J of pig iron or steel is covered by an iron oxide-containing slag layer S to which iron oxide material, iron sulphide material, scrap, and/or other iron carrier is supplied, a free oxygen-containing gas is supplied directly into the slag layer (pipe L) to such a depth that CO, and, if reduction means containing H 2 or hydrocarbons are added H 2 , moving up through the slag layer will convert to CO 2 and H 2 O respectively to an extent of more than 70%, and reduction means is supplied directly to the iron bath J, e.g. if the C content of J is insufficient for smelting reduction, by pipe R, the relative concentrations of the ions in the slag layer being such that the ratio (Ca<SP>2+</SP>+ Mg<SP>2+</SP> + Fe<SP>2+</SP> + Fe<SP>3+</SP>) to Si<SP>2+</SP> is greater than 1. The oxygen-containing gas is air, oxygen, air/oxygen, or argon/oxygen, the reducing agent is coke powder, mineral oil, natural gas, cracking gases, producer gas or water gas, and the slag layer is preferably at least 30 cm. deep.
