Abstract

1,243,008. Endless belt conveyers, air-cushion supported. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 18 Nov., 1966 [23 Nov., 1967], No. 53448/67. Heading B8A. The upper run of a conveyer belt 6 is supported above a plate 1 by an air cushion effect. The belt includes endless supporting members 7 of V cross-section which are held in spaced relation by laterally extending portions 8. The drive and return rollers 3 and the plate 1 are formed with V-shaped recesses in which the members 7 bear. The portions 8 have detachable feet (Fig. 3, not shown) which are formed with detachable labyrinth seals (11) for engaging the member 1. This arrangement tends to prevent interchange of air between the compartments defined by the members 7 and portions 8. Suction is applied via conduits 13, 14, 15. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 8, side seal portions 32 of the belt co-operate with the edges of outer side frame panels 28 in order to maintain pressure. A plurality of belts in series may be connected by rotary drive members 23, the drive being transmitted by the interengagement of transversely extending slats 21. The latter may enable the belts to be used as elevators.
