Abstract

1,243,096. Inertia switches; partly electromagnetic. COAST LINES Ltd. 6 March, 1970 [6 March, 1969], No. 11862/69. Heading H1N. [Also in Division G1] A brake efficiency indicator 10 on a vehicle has at least its indicating parts 12, 14 and 16 incorporated in another instrument adapted for mounting in the vehicle dashboard or instrument panel. As shown three tubes 22, 24, 26 each containing a metal ball 38 are pivoted independently at 28 with rest positions determined by fixed collars of different diameters on a stop rod 30 so that they respond at different predetermined decelerations to actuate switches in the circuits of three lamps 12, 14, 16. When a two-way switch 18 is moved to its "reset" position a solenoid 51 receives current from the vehicle battery and lifts the tubes to their rest positions. Then when switch 18 is moved to its "test" position the lamp circuits are prepared and upon application of the brakes deceleration of the vehicle causes the balls 38 to roll up the inclined tubes. Those that rock to close their associated switches are indicated by the lamps which signify which predetermined decelerations are reached and hence the brake efficiency. The sensing mechanism 10 may be built into the composite instrument or mounted in a remote part of the vehicle. The visual indication may be supplemented or replaced by aural signals which may vary in pitch. A permanent record of brake efficiency may also be made by a tape or a chart recorder.
