Abstract
1,243,095. Ferroelectric crystals. NATIONAL LEAD CO. 27 Feb., 1969 [1 March, 1968], No. 10517/69. Heading H1K. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for sensing polar liquid vapours comprises a ferro- or ferri-electric crystal 70 having catalytic impurities therein for enhancing changes in resistivity and/or dielectric constant of the crystal when subjected to polar liquid vapours and a pair of electrodes 72, 76 in contact with the crystal. The electrodes may be on the same or opposite faces of the crystal and preferably cover an area no more than one tenth of the remaining area of the faces they contact. They may be shaped to have a large periphery for their area. Crystals.-For sensing humidity, the crystal may be bismuth titanate, containing tantalum, chromium, zirconium, hafnium or niobium, 0À05 to 3 mole per cent. For sensing polar liquid vapours of crude oils, e.g. hydrogen sulphide, the crystal may be bismuth titanate containing any one or more of the rare earths. Other possible crystals include sodium potassium niobate, sodium niobate vanadate, lithium niobate and barium sodium niobate. Additives for enhancing resistivity variations are lanthanum, niobium, tantalum and molybdenum. Additives for enhancing capacitive variations are strontium, lanthanum, zirconium and chromium. The electrodes may be of a fired conductive oxide. Other additives mentioned are: Ba, Y, Pb, V, Sb, Te, W, Mn, Ce, Sm-Gd, Gd. Heat treatment details are given.
