Abstract
1,243,092. Calcium sulphate α-hemihydrate. GIULINI G.m.b.H. GEB. 14 Aug., 1968 [16 Aug., 1967; 31 May, 1968], No. 38939/68. Addition to 992,468. Heading C1A. Calcium sulphate α-hemihydrate crystals are produced by adding an aqueous suspension of finely divided CaSO 4 .2H 2 O, continuously or intermittently, to an aqueous reaction mixture having a pH of 1À1-5 in at least one reaction vessel at 105-140‹ C., and withdrawing α-CaSO 4 .¢H 2 O continuously or intermittently, the crystal size and growth of the α-CaSO 4 .¢H 2 O being regulated by the additional continuous or intermittent addition (separate from the aqueous suspension of CaSO 4 .2H 2 O) of seed crystals of α- or #-hemihydrate, and/or by localized production of seeds in the aqueous suspension by localized heating within the reaction vessel, or by intermittent addition to the reaction vessel of a crystallization influencing substance or sulphuric acid or a salt thereof. The CaSO 4 .2H 2 O may be obtained by the acidulation of phosphate rock. The reaction mixture may contain a crystallization-influencing substance.
