1,242,689. Treating textiles. CIBA-GEIGY A.G. 28 Nov., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 56570/68. Heading DIP. [Also in Divisions C4 and C5] Dry flowable preparations, suitable for use as an additive in products for improving or clearing textile materials, consist of or contain particles of a size not exceeding 5 microns of an optical brightener having a solubility in water at 20‹C not exceeding 0.5 part by weight per 100 parts by weight of water in which the particles of the optical brightener are enclosed in an organic, water-soluble protective substance. The weight ratio of brightener to protective substance is suitably from 9:1 to 1:99. The brightener may be an aryloxazoyl thiophene, a dibenzothiaphene-5-dioxide. a coumarin derivative, a pyrazoline, or a mono- or dioxazole. Numerous examples are given. Suitable film-forming substances are polyvinylpyrrolidones, polymers of acrylic or methacrylic acid and their ester and amide derivatives, copolymers containing maleic acid or maleic anhydride, copolymers of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid, cellulose ethers, starches or sugars, shellac, casein, polysulphone resins, urea and melamine formaldehyde condensates, poly- [3,3'-methyl imino-bis-trimethylene-adipic acid amide], polybenzoxazoles, cellulose sulphuric acid esters, polyvinylpiperidones, gelatin, pectins, heparin, alginic acid, polystyrene-sulphonic acid, cyanoethylcellulose, condensates of #-naphthalene sulphonic acid and formaldehyde, and adducts of ethylene oxide and alkylphenols. The preparation is produced by evaporating a dispersion of a finely dispersed, sparingly water-soluble optical brightener in an aqueous solution of a substance capable of forming a protective film to dryness. Alternatively the dispersion is sprayed on to the dry preparation of detergents with subsequent drying. Additives include dodecylbenzene sulphonate, sodium laurylsulphonate, sodium polyphosphate, sodium sulphate, sodium metalisilicate, E.D.T.A. and C.M.C.
