Abstract

1,242,534. Turbines. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Dec.2, 1968 [Nov.30, 1967], No. 54624/67. Heading F1T. In a modification of the flow control apparatus claimed in Specification 1, 230,778 a fluid-flow machine, such as the turbine of a gas turbine engine, comprises an annular assembly of stator blades 10 having pivoted flap members 14 mounted between adjacent blades 10 and movable so as to vary the area of the flow passages between the blades. The members 14 define the radially outer boundary of the flow passages and each carries a piston 16 arcuate about the flap pivot 15 and extending into an annular chamber 13 in the turbine casing. The flaps 14 normally lie in the position 14a but when a reduction in flow area is required air from the engine compressor is supplied to chamber 13 via valve 19 to act on pistons 16 and force flaps 14 into position 14b.
