A differential crown wheel 16 having a housing 14 is supported at each end in its axle casing 12 by tapered roller bearings 22, 24, 26 and the casing 12 is itself supported on members 30, 32 so that gauge heads 34, 36 may be inserted into the differential yokes 18, 20 for the purpose of measuring the "run out" or axial variance of the crown wheel 16 and preloading the roller bearings. In Fig. 3 an assembly for measuring the spacing between a bearing and its seat is provided within the gauge head 34 and comprises an assembly 58 rotated by means of tubes 134, 132 and including a friction member 120 which may be expanded to engage and rotate the crown gear by axially moving a cam head 126 and a tube 128. The gauge head 34 is locked to the yoke 20 by a finger 48 on a head 64 which may be rotated and moved axially by a system of rods and cams 66, 50, 54, 80 and 82 operated by sliding a sleeve 236. A finger element 150 and plunger 154 mounted in a plunger assembly 38 slidably telescopic in a slide assembly 236, are pressed against a part 160 the actual movement of which plunger 38 is correlated with the undulating movements of the bearing races. This movement is used to operate a differential transformer 152 the output from which is taken by a cable 162 to an electrical measuring system.
