Abstract
1,242,418. Flexible chamber pumps. SUSQUEHANNA CORP. Aug.21, 1968 [Sept.15, 1967], No.39983/68. Heading F1A. [Also in Division A5] A positive displacement pump comprises a deformable generally cone-shaped hollow chamber 10 closed at the narrow end and made from a natural or synthetic polymer, a closure 18 which may be integral with or removable from the chamber, a generally tangential inlet passage 12, and a generally tangential outlet passage 13, both passages 13 and 12 being provided with a non-return valve 14. Pumping action is obtained by periodically deforming the chamber 10, preferably by twisting by means of an actuator, which grips a cylindrical extension 16 protruding from the narrow end, and a lever 24 which may be driven by a motor with a cammed flywheel. The deformation of the chamber may be limited by fixing an external rigid truncated cone 28 to the actuator. By varying the height of the cone 28, the degree of twist of the chamber and its configuration, an inwardly lobed shape, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), is obtained without outward distension, to provide a smooth spiral flow-path for the fluid. In modifications, the pump chamber is twisted by providing an expanding helix tube around the chamber with pulses of hydraulic fluid through it, or by twisting a helical spring around it. The chamber may be provided with means to remove stagnant fluid and/ or solids and heavy liquids.
