Abstract
1,242,252. Measuring boreholes of geological formations. SOC, DE PROSPECTIONS ELECTRIQUE SCHLUMBERGER. Oct.18, 1969 [Nov.2, 1967], No.49410/68. Heading G1M. Apparatus for use in measuring diameters of boreholes or resistivity or dip of geological formations comprises, a body 2 which may be suspended from an electrical cable or wireline (not shown), a rod 40 which may be moved by a control piston 62 actuated by fluid-pressure developed in cylinder 48 below the piston, two or more arms 10, 12, each as in Fig. 2, pivoted at 6 and 8 to the body 2 and carrying rollers 24, blade springs 28, 30 fixed to the body and engaging rollers 26 on the arms to bias them outwardly, and a potentiometer 82 which is operated by a rod 84 from the rod 40 and connected to terminals 90 and the cable to give a reading of the movement of the arms 10, 12. The housing 4 contains a hydraulic system electrically controlled from the surface and connected by pipes 56 and 60 to the cylinder 48. In operation the main arms may be closed by supplying fluid to the cylinder 48 to move the piston 62 upwardly, and the apparatus is lowered into the bore. The fluid-pressure is then reduced to allow the arms 10, 12 to move the rollers 24 out to touch the bore sides under the influence of the blade springs. In Fig. 3 there are two control rods 40 one within the other and each is connected by trunnions 46a, 46b to pairs of arms 10, 12. In Fig.4 (not shown) the rollers 24 are replaced by pads 102, 104 which are arranged by pairs of arms 10a, 12a and 118, 120, and also by connecting linkage, to be always parallel to the axis of the rod 40a. In Fig.5 (not shown) the blade springs are attached at their upper ends to a slider (206) which may be moved by a rod (208) connected to a double acting piston (212) and in this way the spring pressures may be remotely controlled.
