Abstract

1,242,052. Percussive drills. WICKMAN WIMET Ltd. 5 Aug., 1968 [25 May, 1967], No. 24388/67. Heading B4C. [Also in Division B3] A rotary and percussive rock drilling apparatus comprises a chuck having a bore, and a tool bit having a shank received in the bore and an integral enlarged head carrying cutting inserts. The cross-sectional shape of the shank normal to its axis is a regular multi-sided figure with all the sides convex. As illustrated the shank is three-sided, and includes a flat 15 which is engaged by a pin 24 to permit limited axial movement of the bit relative to the chuck. The bore is of a complementary shape so that relative rotation between the shank and chuck is prevented. The chuck comprises a hollow cylindrical member 17 adapted to be secured at one end to a housing incorporating a reciprocating hammer, and a sleeve 19 including the bore. Grooves 22 in the sleeve 19 permit clearing fluid to be directed to the head of the bit. Rotation of the sleeve 19 relative to the member 17 is prevented by dogs on the free end of member 17 engaging in slots provided in a flange (20), (Fig. 2, not shown), extending outwardly of the forward end of the sleeve 19.
