Abstract

1,241,903. Winding webs. INTA-ROTO Inc. 16 Oct., 1969 [17 Oct., 1968; 8 Sept., 1969], No. 50975/69. Heading B8R. In. the winding of web material into rolls, a method of severing the web to terminate one roll and initiate the winding of a new roll comprises the steps of (a) applying to the web W, which may previously have been slit into strips S, an adhesive tape 30 disposed at an angle to the transverse of the web and having its leading end 30<SP>1</SP> extending beyond the adjacent edge of the web; (b) adhering the tape-end 30<SP>1</SP> to a mandrel 20 on which a new roll is to be wound; and (c) advancing the web W under tension through a path diverging from.the mandrel 20 (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) while rotating the mandrel to wind the tape helically thereon and causing the web to tear along the leading edge 30a of the tape, whereby the leading end of the severed web is wound on the new mandrel together with the tape. A second tape 34 may be applied to the web surface in overlapping relation with the leading edge 30a of the first tape 30 so that an adhesive surface on the tape 34 is exposed as the web is torn along the edge 30a, this surface securing the trailing end of the web on the completely wound roll. The tapes may be applied by hand during a conventional winding operation, or a known winding machine of the indexable-turret type may be provided with a tape-bar to facilitate application of the tapes (Figs. 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8, not shown). For a wide web, two tear-tapes may be applied to the web by means of a tape bar comprised of two relatively rotatable sections, the tapes being disposed at an angle relative to each other with the leading ends of the tape extending beyond the respective edges of the web and the trailing ends of the tapes meeting in an apex centrally of the web (Figs. 9 to 11, not shown).
