Abstract
1,241,941. Producing concrete aggregate. W. D. EVANS. 1 July, 1968 [3 April, 1967], No. 15244/67. Headings C1A and C1J. Fired ceramic compacts, suitable as concrete aggregate or constructional material, are produced by compacting a mixture of non-metallic inorganic particles with 0À5-10% by vol. water containing 0À2-2% organic C/H/O- containing, material, by weight of the inorganic particles, at 0À5-10 tons per in.<SP>2</SP> for not more than 5 mins., and firing the " green " compacts at 900-1350‹ C. for at least 2 mins. and until particle coalescence occurs. The inorganic material may be pulverized fuel ash (fly ash), the clay-like sediment containing fine coal obtained from coal-washing, bloated or sintered clays, kaolin, carbon, or alumina powders. The organic binder may be a sugar, starch, cellulose, or a derivative thereof, a protein, or humic acid, particularly sewage sludge.
