Abstract
1,241,630. Odometers. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Dec.18, 1969 [Jan.13, 1969], No.61686/69. Heading G1K. [Also in Division F2] A non-reversible odometer comprises an input shaft 17 driven in response to movement of a vehicle, number wheels 42 driven by a gear 41 to display distance travelled, a gear train including a primary shaft 31 driven when shaft 17 is rotated and with a gear 38 rotatable thereon engaging gear 41 and drive means between the shaft 31 and gear 38 whose driving connection is interrupted when the input shaft 17 turns in a direction which would reduce the total displayed by the wheels 42. The primary shaft 31 may be formed with a flange 51, Fig.2, supporting a pair of cams 52 with drop-offs 52 for engaging, in one direction of rotation, the ends 58 of flexible tabs 56 attached to the gear 38, whilst in the opposite direction of rotation no driving engagement occurs. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown) a ring is keyed to the shaft 31 for rotation therewith but can slide axially thereon, a spring urging it towards the gear 38 so that cams on the ring may drivingly engage or ride over projections on the gear 38 according to the direction of rotation of the input shaft.
