Abstract

1,241,609. Buoyant life-saving devices. BRITISH ROPES Ltd. 13 Feb., 1970 [16 Dec., 1968], No. 59808/68. Heading B7U. A life-saving device comprises a ring 1 of buoyant material supporting netting 4 on which a person can be supported, the ring being elastically deformable and biased into its extended working position. The ring is formed by joining the ends of an extruded length of synthetic elastomer, and may have a core of expanded or foamed elastomer. The netting may be of inherently buoyant, synthetic elastomeric fibre or tape with knotted or heatsealed joints. Various shapes are described for the netting mesh and the cross-section of the rod forming ring 1. A vertical line is secured to the ring by an eyeletted strap. Floats may be attached to the ring, or buoyant cord may be wrapped around the ring, to increase its buoyancy. The ring may have a stainless-steel wire reinforcement unjoined at its ends. The ring is folded for storage, and unfolds when thrown, Figs. 9 to 13 (not shown).
