Abstract

1,241,297. Electrically conductive thermoplastics. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 18 Nov., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 54123/67. Heading C3P. Electrically conductive articles are made from thermoplastics compositions comprising a sintered matrix of coated thermoplastics granules, each of which granules is at least partially coated with a layer of thermoplastics material containing as filler sufficient of a conducting powder to render the layer conducting. Specified plastics are propylene polymers and copolymers, polyethylene, poly-4-methylpentene-1 and polyvinyl chloride. Specified fillers are carbon blacks, graphite, metal powders and doped silicon. The coated particles may be obtained by double extrusion wherein a stream of filled plastic is injected into a stream of unfilled plastic before the latter is extruded. In an example, acetylene black filled polyethylene is extruded into a stream of polypropylene which is subsequently extruded and chopped into granules which may be moulded.
