Abstract
1,240,893. Casting processes; ingot moulds. OLSSON INTERNATIONAL Inc. 11 Sept. 1968 [17 Nov., 1967], No. 43181/68. Heading B3F. Metal slabs and billets are cast in a mould with a cavity defined by a peripheral wall 11 and a bottom wall 19 and provided with a pouring riser 12, by pouring molten metal into the riser and while the cavity is being filled from the riser applying a force to one movable wall (e.g. the bottom wall 19) of the mould to effect a reduction in size of the mould cavity. In Fig. 2, the mould of Fig. 1 is shown in plan and has eight cavities 13 spaced about an octagonal runner 12. The melt is poured from successively higher passages 12a as the mould bases are moved upwardly. The mould is cooled by coolant flowing in passages 21. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4) four cavities 34 lead off from a central runner 35 through gates 36. A sheet material (metal sheet or cardboard) 38 covers the gates and is melted or decomposed by the molten metal during pouring. Asbestos pads 40 cover base-plates 39. The peripheral wall parts 31, 32 are clamped by bands 33 bolted to the end parts 32 and wedges 42 between the bands and side-parts 31. A similar construction is used for a single cavity mould with a side riser (not shown).
