Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A pressure-sensitive transfer, which can be used to apply indicia 2 of an ink containing a non-volatile fluid to a receptor surface, comprises a support sheer 1 indicia 2, a layer of pressuresensitive adhesive 3 and a protective surface layer 5 of translucent particles having a refractive index below 1À7, a maximum grain size of 50 millimicrons and a specific gravity below 3. When the transfer is applied to the receptor surface pressure forces adhesive through the layer 5 and wets both the surface and the particles of the layer 5 with adhesive. The particles of layer 5 do not impair the transparency of the applied transfer. Preferably, the support sheet 1 is of a hydrocarbon polymer such as polyethylene or polystyrene and is treated by ion bombardment, after being silk screen printed, with indicia 2, to enhance bonding of the adhesive. The non-volatile fluid in indicia 2 diffuses into the adhesive which covers the indicia 2, and lowers its viscosity, so as to permit the indicia 2 to be adjusted on the receptor surface. Preferably, the adhesive contains a volatile solvent, and contains the particles which form layer 5 in suspension when it is applied. Volatilization of the solvent then carries the particles to the free surface of the transfer, where they form the layer 5. A protective sheer of, e.g. silicone-treated paper may be temporarily placed over the layer 5. Ink formulµ, adhesive formulµ and materials for layer 5 are described with examples.
