In a knitting machine cam system which guides the butts 1 of needles or sinkers, a stitch cam 4 and counter cam 5 each have a part 8, 10a which is resilient at the point of impact of the needle or sinker butts with that cam. In modifications, the counter cam may include, instead of spring biassed part 10a, a resilient part biassed by a leaf spring, a ball engaging a rubber block or a resilient finger.
