Abstract
1,139,287. Separating oil from water. A LAWSON. 13 Feb., 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 6851/67. Heading B1D. Apparatus for separating oil from water comprises a housing divided by vertical partitions into three successive coalescing chambers accommodating annular, inward flow coalescing elements 27 and a final gravity settling chamber containing vertical baffle 29, each chamber having an upper reservoir 23 in which oil, coalesced into large drops, collects. The apparatus is built as a series of sections, with partitions 15 carrying elements 27 clamped between them, so that more or less chambers of either type may be assembled together with end plates 16, 17. Reservoirs 23 include external level gauges (25), air release valves (26) and oil release valves (24). The apparatus is cleaned by injecting steam through inlet 18 and outlet 21 successively, with flow cut off, to churn the liquid within the housing which is then drained through conduits 33. The elements 27 comprise multilayer, helically wound knitted metal tape or tube, with a carbonaceous coating to coalesce the oil.
