Abstract
1,138,971. Treating gases with discharges. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 15 March, 1966 [6 April, 1965], No. 11261/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Division C5] A method of synthesizing a desired gas from a process gas containing all the elements of the desired gas comprises the steps of passing a stream of the process gas through an electric arc which is periodically varying in intensity so as to form alternate relatively hot volumes of gas which are heated to a temperature at which dissociation of the molecules of the process gas occurs, and relatively cold volumes of gas, mixing said relatively hot and cold volumes to produce a gas temperature within the range of temperatures at which the desired gas is a stable recombination product, and thereafter quickly cooling the mixture to stabilize a substantial portion of the desired recombination product. The periodic variation of the arc is preferably obtained by energizing the arc from an A.C. source. A single arc heater having two electrodes connected directly to a transformer may be used and will produce alternate hot and cold volumes of gas if the gas residence time in the heater is of the order of the duration of one power cycle. An arc heater as described in Specification 1,023,730, apart from having a wider exhaust nozzle, is suitable. Two arc heaters may be used, as in the arrangement shown in which methane or other gas passes through inlets 264 and 267 to arc heaters 213 and 214 connected in parallel across an A.C. supply through rectifiers 221 and 226 so that heating occurs alternately in the two heaters on alternate halfcycles of the supply. A mixing chamber 266 has an exhaust nozzle 272 containing a spray head 271. Outlets 265 and 268 may be diametrically opposite. The mixing chamber 266 may be spherical or cylindrical, and may contain a water cooled baffle to assist mixing. The rectifiers may be biased, and H.F. generators may be provided to ensure rapid re-striking of the arcs. Further alternative embodiments have three heaters or six heaters connected to a 3 phase supply.
