Abstract

1,138,729. Moulding footwear. A. NOVA, R. NOVA and O. NOVA [trading as OFFICINE MECCANICHE ANTONIO NOVA]. 23 May, 1966 [3 June, 1965; 17 March, 1966], No. 22886/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division A3] A method of moulding a rubber sole on to a lasted upper 2 comprises bending a lower edge of the upper outwardly to form a welt and bonding thereto by stitching or gluing an insole (3), supporting the welt portion on lips 4 on outwardly rotatable frame portions 5 and bringing to the welt a mould 9, side walls 9a thereof terminating in inner downward sharp projections 9b which seat on the insole portion outwardly of the last, and filling the mould hollow 8 with rubber to be vulcanized. The mould is then moved towards the last by a cylinder 11, the sharp projections 9b cutting the insole and sealing the mould against egress of rubber. Vulcanization is then carried out by means of electric heaters (40), (41), and the upper 2 is then trimmed by further depression of the projections 9b. Alternatively vulcanization may be carried out after trimming of the upper or before trimming of the insole. Stripping is facilitated by outward rotation of frames 5. The lips (Fig. 6) are carried by two frame halves (20), (21) supported about a common axis 18, while side mould portions (31), (32) are supported against the action of a spring (37) on top of adjustable columns (29), (30) each of which is outwardly rotatable about horizontal pivots (28), (29) on a plane higher than the pivot (18). The mould bottom may be adjustable in height during vulcanization by being connected to a piston Alternatively the extent to which the vulcanized material is pressed may be adjusted by interposing an intermediate plate (42) between the bottom member (39) of the mould and its supporting plate (39).
