Abstract

1,138,185. Gun turrets. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S.A. 25 Feb., 1966 [26 April, 1965], No. 17544/65. Heading F3C. A gun turret comprises a rotatable cupola 1 having a gun port 14 in which a gun cradle 17 is mounted about an elevation axis X on a pair of trunnions 16. The port 14 is closed by a cylindrical armoured mantelet 23. The major part of the cradle 17 is housed outside the cupola and thus a counterbalancing device is provided in the form of an hydraulic piston and cylinder device 24 which is also used for laying the gun in elevation. The turret is rotatable in azimuth by means of a motor 8 with a pinion 7 co-operating with gear teeth 6 of the turret. Ammunition is fed to a feed housing 33 on the gun cradle 17 through a port arranged on the elevation axis X, in the cupola and an ammunition shoot extending in a curved path from the port to the feed housing (Fig. 3, not shown). The belted ammunition is fed through the shoot by guide sprockets located towards the inside of the bend of the shoot. A mantelet is provided between the end of the shoot and the ammunition port. The cupola is further provided with windows (9, not shown), doors 10, (11) and four types of sighting devices (Fig. 2, not shown). The rear end of the gun cradle has a door accessible from inside the cupola to give access to a gun in the gun cradle.
