Abstract

1,137,158. Grinding. E. GIERDEN. 12 Oct., 1966 [28 Oct., 1965; 30 Dec., 1965; 3 Feb., 1966; 24 June, 1966], No. 45557/66. Heading B3D. A machine for cutting spectacle glasses comprises a glass-carrying shaft 01, Fig. 1, revolvably carried by an arm 1 pivotable round an axis XX, the shaft also carrying a support for securing preferably by means of jaws M1, M2, a spectacle frame 2 which serves as a templet; the frame being fitted in a plane parallel to the glass to be cut, a feeler roller 30 for following the inner periphery of the bezel of the frame connected through pivotal connections with a movable system subjected to spring or weight action urging the feeler roller into contact with the bezel, the system abutting when the glass has been ground at any point to a sufficient extent against a stationary stop. The glass V is held between a motor driven shaft 01 and a sleeve 6 on the arm 1 which is counterbalanced by a weight 3 for movement abut the axis XX on the machine body B. A shaft U2 driven by the motor 2 is keyed to a plate 18, and a plate P can by adjusted in two directions at right angles to one another relative to plate 18 and carries the jaws M1, M2 for supporting the spectacle frame L, reference circles being provided for aligning the opening in the frame with the optical axis of the glass. The roller 30 is carried by a link 32 which has a length equal to the radius of the grinding wheel C and is pivotally connected to a slider comprising a member 33 having rods 34 slidable in an adjustably-fixed arm B<SP>1</SP>. A cam follower 40 is secured to the arm and engages a cam 41 rotatably carried by a member 35 secured to the rods 34. A weight 44 acts on the cam to urge the latter in engagement with the follower so that the slider is urged to engage the roller 30 with the bezel and the position of the glass relative to the grinding wheel. Grinding continues until the member 33 abuts the arm B<SP>1</SP>. When grinding is completed, the weight 44 can be lifted so that a semicircular member 53 abuts the follower 40 to move the roller 30 away from the bezel. In another embodiment, the arm B<SP>1</SP> has an extension, 83, Fig. 11, over which is fitted a stirrup having arms 84 supporting a pivot 85 for a member 88 carrying a counterweight 90. The member 88 has a pair of arms, the ends of which support a pivot 91 around which a lever 92 is free to rock and is balanced by a counterweight 93. The lever 92 carries the roller 30 for engaging the bezel of the spectacle frame. The pivot 85 also carries an abutment 86 having an adjustable screw 87 against which the member 88 abuts when the glass is reduced to the correct size. The casing formed with the arms 84 can be withdrawn from the extension 83 to provide easy access to the jaws M1, M2. A device is described which permits correct positioning of a longitudinally curved spectacle frame in the jaws, and the jaws are formed with slidable members which prevent deformation of the bezels when clamped between the jaws. In other embodiments, the spectacle frame is located on the plate P<SP>1</SP> by a plurality of members adjustably mounted on the plate.
