Abstract
1,136,751. Addition polymers &c. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 Feb., 1966 [3 March, 1965], No. 9091/65. Heading C3P. [Also in Division B2] A partially polymerized composition is prepared by a process wherein a compound containing two or more #,γ-unsaturated ether groups (defined) is treated with oxygencontaining gas to introduce oxygen-containing groups therein and is concurrently or subsequently reacted with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer (defined) at a temperature greater than 50‹ C. and/or in the presence of a metal drier salt, thereby generating free radicals on the compound containing #,γ-unsaturated ether groups and causing polymerization of the monomer. The polymers may be further polymerized or cured, optionally in the presence of conventional composition additives. In the Examples (1) pentallylether of tetraglycerol is heated with oxygen, and the product used in a polymerization with n-octylacrylate, and the polymer mixed with cobalt octoate, (2) lauryl methacrylate, pentallyl ether of tetraglycerol, and cobalt octoate are heated together in the presence of oxygen, the polymer formed being mixed with dipentene, and (3) glycerol triallylether is heated in air and the product used in a polymerization with lauryl acrylate, the product being purified and then mixed with cobalt octoate.
