Abstract
1,135,878. Vinegar. FRINGS, G. m. b. H. March 31, 1967 [April 5, 1966], No.14885/67. Heading C6E. [Also in Division B1] A submerged aerating rotor 9 is driven by a shaft 17 extending through the bottom of a vessel and is coaxial with a stationary air intake 10. The rotor has four to eight air outlets 2 and is surrounded by a stator 6 having at least twelve non- radial vanes 11 secured between flat rings 7, 8. Liquid enters the rotor from the top and bottom into the spaces between the air outlets, which are partly shrouded as by rings 4, 5 or by inward extensions from the stator. There may be four stationary stabilizing baffles 12 and the stator may be supported by four stationary baffles 6a, a plate 32 and a ring 33. The intake of air may be adjustably controlled at a constant rate irrespective of the depth of liquid by an automatic throttle actuated by the vacuum in the intake pipe (see Fig. 4 not shown). The rotor speed may be 1400-1800 r. p. m and it may be <SP>1</SP>/ 15 to # the diameter of the vessel according to the desired gas intake rate. A submerged alcohol vinegar fermentation was carried out in a tank 3À90m diameter with a liquid depth of 4À0m, 200m<SP>3</SP> of air per hour being introduced with an acidification rate of 0À17 per cent acetic acid per hour. The power consumption was 0À8 kwh per 10m<SP>3</SP> of air; the yield was 98 per cent and a concentration of 13 per cent acetic acid was obtained.
