Abstract

[Also in Division G2] A method of coating a non-planar surface with a radiation-sensitive composition 11 comprises depositing the desired thickness of the composition on a temporary support, stripping the resulting coating from the support, floating the stripped coating on a liquid medium 13 capable of swelling the coating and over a non-planar surface 12 submerged in the liquid, and contacting the non-planar surface with the radiation-sensitive coating at a temperature below the break temperature of the coating. Preferred radiation-sensitive compositions comprise a water-soluble or water-permeable colloid e.g. gelatin, albumen, gum arabic, hydrolized cellulose acetate or polyvinyl alcohol having a radiation-sensitive component e.g. a silver halide, a light-sensitive iron salt or a diazonium compound. Light sensivtie polymers and xerographic compositions may also be used. The compositions are preferably applied to the temporary support in acetone, 2 - ethoxyethanol, benzene or toluene and may contain colour formers, dye intermediates, filter dyes and sensitizing dyes. The coatings may comprise multilayer elements e.g. as used for colour photography. The specified liquid is water. The specified non-planar surface is of glass. Specified supports are of cellulose triacetate and polyesters.
