Abstract
1,134,831. Eye examining apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. May 12, 1966 [March 2, 1965], No.8912/65. Heading G2J. The apparatus presents to one eye of an observer a first object and to his two eyes a second object which can take up different positions spaced from the observer. The indication of the distance of the second object obtained by binocular vision can be used to assess the distance of the first object. As shown, the apparatus is in the form of a box having electro-luminescent panels 11, 12, the latter being on a hinged door, and containing a partial reflector 18 so that the observer's eyes 13, 14 can view the two panels in super-position. In use panel 12 is swung out of the way, illuminated disc 21 is supported on rods so that its distance away from the observer can be varied and measured and a three-dimensional representation 15 is supported on panel 11. In addition, a polarizer covers the representation 15 and a crossed analyser 25 is disposed in front of the observer's eye 13. The apparatus can also be used to determine an observer's response to changes in illumination intensity by removing the illuminated disc 21, representation 15 and the polarizer and analyser and instead disposing apertured masks over the panels 11, 12 which are energized through a transformer so that the intensities may be varied while keeping constant the ratio between the difference in their intensities to the intensity of panel 11. Flicker phenomena may similarly be investigated. The apparatus may also be used as a stereoscope or a tachnistoscope.
