Abstract

1,134,675. Papermaking. CLUPAK Inc. 7 March, 1967 [12 July, 1966], No. 10669/67. Headings D2A and D2B. Newsprint paper of enhanced stretchability containing at least 65% groundwood is made by subjecting a web of the paper while still on the paper-making machine and wet enough to be suitably plastic to compaction in the machine direction by confining it under pressure between a rigid, moving, smooth surface of a rotating element and a resilient surface moving more slowly than the rigid surface and thereafter completing the drying, and optionally calendering. Preferably the wire side of the paper is in contact with the rigid surface. The web may be shrunk by more than the desired final amount and then partially stretched to give the desired final shrinkage. Two kinds of shrinking apparatus that can be placed between first and second drier sections of a papermachine are described. In the first, a thick rubber belt is trained about idler rolls and a stationary bar having a convex surface. This belt is pressed against a heated drum, with the bar at the on-running end of the zone of contact, and the web passes between the drum and the belt. In the second, two rolls are pressed together, one having a soft outer layer of rubbery material, and the other of polished metal. The soft-surfaced roll is connected through universal joints with a braked drum, and the metal drum may be internally heated.
