A sheet-working apparatus comprises a horizontal work-table arranged between vertical side walls and having a working place on its surface, a cross-bar at or above the height of the table surface, and horizontally adjustable relative to the work-table within limits determined by the engagement of an abutment carried by the cross-bar with pairs of spaced apart stops, the stops being vertically adjustable in pairs to bring a desired pair into the plane of the horizontal path of the abutment. The table 1 has the working place indicated by 3 and a stop-face 6 formed, on a bar 7 which is supported by vertically adjustable shafts 9. The above assembly is slidable as a unit along guide rails 29 and is moved by hand or by power through chains attached to the bearings 10 and passing over sprocket wheels at each end of the rails 29. An extension of the cross-bar assembly an abutment 18 which reciprocates between the end faces of stop-bars 21. These bars are arranged in pairs in a frame 34 which has a step-by-step vertical movement controlled by a pawl and ratchet-wheel 36, 28, actuated by an air cylinder 37. The frame is drawn downwards by an air cylinder 22. In automatic operation the frame is moved by a step distance, equal to the vertical spacing between adjacent pairs of stop-bars, after each forward and backward motion of the crossbar assembly. In a modification the stop-bars are arranged parallel to the axis of a turret, the axis being parallel to the path of movement of the cross-bar assembly. The turret is rotated intermittently to bring successive pairs of stop-bars to the operative position. The crossbar assembly is reciprocated by a pneumatic cylinder.
