Abstract

1,134,342. Automatic pressure control. SPERRY RAND CORP. April 7, 1966 [April 23, 1965], No.15634/66. Heading G3R. When the pressure in a low-pressure area 14 between the bottom surface of magnetic tape 12 and loop-box 10 drops below a predetermined value, vacuum switch 48 is held open to interrupt the gating circuit of silicon controlled rectifier 22. Series motor 18 is de-energized so that vacuum pump 16 decelerates to permit the pressure in the area 14 to increase. The vacuum switch 48 remains closed to render the rectifier 22 conductive when the pressure in the area 14 rises. The speed of the vacuum pump is thus increased to reduce the pressure below the tape the upper side of which is subjected to atmospheric pressure. The vacuum switch unit comprises a flexible diaphragm separating two chambers one of which is exposed to atmosphere and the other is connected to the area 14 of the tape loop-box. The pressure at which the switch 48 is actuated is set by the position of an adjustable leakage valve 46.
