Abstract

1,132,711. Internal shoe-drum brakes. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. 3 June, 1966 [10 June, 1965], No. 24634/65. Heading F2E. [Also in Division D1] A brake in a spindle assembly on a spinning &c. frame, comprises one or more shoes mounted on a stationary part of the assembly, a flexible container for air disposed between the shoe(s) and the stationary part of the assembly, and means to supply air to the container, whereby the latter applies an outwardly-directed force to the shoe(s) to move them against an internal braking-surface. The spindle, driven by a wharve 7, rotates on a footstep inside a sleeve 3 in a holster 4. The holster has an outwardly directed platform 6 with an upright collar 14, between which and three equidistant brakeshoes 16 is disposed a flexible tube 17 closed at both ends and communicating with a flexible air-line 18 passing between two adjacent shoes. To apply the brake, line 18 is connected to pressure and the shoes are forced radially outwards against the bias of a resilient retaining- ring to engage the inside of the wharve, the shoes being guided by upward extensions in tracks on a flange 15 extending radially from the collar 14. To release the brake, the line is vented to atmosphere.
